History

Gateway Bank's known history began with a bank reorganization on March 7, 1932, as the Bank of Rison, and has remained in business under the same charter ever since. A major fire swept through downtown Rison just before New Year’s eve of 1932. According to the Cleveland County Herald, the fire was described in an issue published on January 4, 1933:

“The fire, of unknown origin, started in the upper story of the Buie Hardware Company and had spread over practically the entire building before firemen could get the city’s hose connected and gain entrance to the building, the delay making it impossible to extinguish the flames. On account of a high wind from the northeast, the fire quickly spread to adjoining buildings, and within two hours the entire half-block on Main Street from Second to the alley was a pile of ruins.”

The Bank of Rison temporarily operated out of the nearby Calaway Building before closing a deal with G.W. Turner to buy the former Farmers & Merchants Bank building. Located at the corner of Second and Main Street, this location became home until the summer of 2015 when the bank built and moved into a new building across Second Street. This location was the first newly constructed building in downtown Rison in over twenty years.

A New Chapter

On October 1, 2013, The Bank of Rison was purchased by Sigma Holdings Inc., an Arkansas group of investors with deep ties to south Arkansas including being alumni of Arkansas universities such as of University of Monticello, Henderson State University & Ouachita Baptist University. The bank was renamed Gateway Bank in June of 2015.

Gateway Bank continues to grow with multiple branches to serve both you and the community. We look forward to continuing our tradition of excellence and customer satisfaction in the years to come.
